The trick is to be able to reliably and consistently do this over the life of the turbine, whilst preserving the integrity of the turbine shaft, which can weigh 40 tons and is operating at over 1,200°C when at full speed.
This module may be small, but it generates a staggering 37.9 kNm of torque at 3000 RPM. The equivalent of eighty-one Ferrari’s running at full tilt.
High speed, high torque turbomachinery such as this has its own challenges. The vibration guarantee that the turbine manufacturer promised its Chinese customer on this project required Jord to perform ultra-precise alignment, down to hundredths of a millimetre, so as to compensate all three possible forms of misalignment.
